Review
Rent was a charming, although challenging show. There was a lot of material that could
be potentially very uncomfortable for many people, however, the production does push the
envelope admirably. Scenes of same-sex kissing, mooning, sex and drug innuendo give the
show a very risque charm. The music was beautiful, brilliant, and bold. From jazzy love songs
to amazing gospel pieces, to catchy rock tunes, the story unfolds in musical glory. Although
there was less set-work, and much of the show was done solo or in a duet, it did not detract
much from the overall show. It was enjoyable, and a definate re-see; I can imagine that there
would be a lot of things that can be caught the second time that can be overlooked in the
first. But, be ready for a production that is definately on the edge, in all respects. Wonderful!
The Los Angeles production (the first touring company I believe), had a great cast. Strong
performers in the roles of Roger, Mark, Mimi, Joanne, and Collins. Neil Patrick Harris (of
Doogie Howser fame) does a really spectacular job as Mark- emotional and strong. Mark Leroy
Jackson was just... likeable as Tom Collins, and Julia Santana turned in a good, although
short-winded performance at times. Kenna Ramsey was a good Joanne with a great voice and good
acting. Christian Mena debuts strongly as a good Roger, although I sensed a lack of emotion
as the show went on, even though his voice remained remarkably good. Finally, D'Monroe and Carla
Bianco both gave fun performances as Benny and Maaureen, respectively. I enjoyed the cast
thoroughly, and Harris' evolution from TV personality to Mark is great to watch. Additionally,
since I got so lucky as to win the lottery for the $20 rush tickets, it was all the more
special. Once again, wonderful!
