Review
The 1997 adaptation of the original Turner Entertainment film of the same
name, this production has a number of Cole Porter songs wrapped around an
adapation of Arthur Kopit's novel. The finished product is a funny, witty,
and strong combination of play and musical. More of the show is dialogue than
any other I've seen. A strong performance was turned in by Melissa Errico as
Tracy Lord, and Tony award nominees Daniel McDonald and Jere Shea in their respective
roles. The rest of the cast, although fairly small, was equally superb. The
on-stage chemistry between Daniel McDonald and Melissa Errico was strong and lent
the production a believable and emotional quality. The pre-Broadway American
Conservatory Theatre try-out was somewhat rough and did not shine to it's full
potential. No doubt, by it's springtime Broadway debut, all of these wrinkles will
be ironed out, and we'll have a strong Tony contender, loaded with talent.
